Chapter Rational Number
Exercise 9.1

Hello Learners......

Let us all resume from the previous class.

Q8. Fill in the boxes with correct symbol out of >, <, =

(i) -5/7     πŸ—†    2/3

Step 1      -5/7 and 2/3    {make equivalent fraction}

Step 2      -5 X 3       and   2  X 7
                7 X 3                3 X 7

Step 3       -15/21   and 14/21   {do comparison}

Step 4   -15/21   < 14/2  {positive number is always greater than negative no}

Finding difficult, let try one more.....

(ii)  -4/5    πŸ—†     -5/7

Step 1    -4/5 and -5/7  {make equivalent fraction}

Step 2     -4 X 7      and     -5 X 5
                5 X 7                 7 X 5

Step 3      -28/35   and  -25/35    {do comparison}

we know that -28 < -25

Step 4 therefore       -28/35  <  -25/35

            hence    -4/5 <  -5/7

Let us try one more.......

(iii) -7/8   πŸ—†   14/-16

Step 1        -7/8  and 14/-16     {make equivalent fraction}

Step 2     -7 X 2     and    14 X  1
               8 X 2              -16 X  1

Step 3     -14/16  and 14/-16

or            -14/16   and -14/16

Step 4      -14/16   =   -14/16

therefore     -7/8  =  14/-16

Boys can you do the same question in a different way, try it by changing 14/-16 to simplest form.

Lets move ahead....

Hey boys, I found something common in question 8 and 9. So why not you try question 9 yourself. If you still have doubts feel free to write in comment box.

Let us do Q 10.

Q10. Write the following rational numbers in ascending order:

(i) -3/5  ,   -2/5  ,  -1/5

Don't you all think this problem is very easy.

Step 1           denominator is same in this problem

Step 2           all rational numbers have negative sign

Step 3           do comparison

Step 4          -3/5  <   -2/5   <  -1/5

(ii) Try to it your self.

(iii) -3/7  ,  -3/2   ,  -3/4

Step 1                      {take LCM of 7, 2, 4 = 28}

Step 2    -3 X 4     ,    -3  X  14 ,     -3 X  7    {make like fractions}
               7 X 4           2  X  14         4 X 7

Step 3   -12/28   ,      -42/28    ,   -21/28

Step 4   -42/28  <  -21/28  <   -12/28

therefore,  -3/2  <  -3/4  <   -3/7
